The
following is a history of the Alexander (Alex) Roberts Family. Most is derived
from US Census data, but some will be from rumors and personal contact. The
1940 US Census will be the starting point and will go back in time from there.
All locations will be Choctaw County, AL except as noted.
In 1940 Alex lived with Josh and his
daughter Jennice. Also in that household at that time were his brother, Bennie and his son,
Woodrow.
In 1930 Alex lived with Josh and his
daughter Jennice. Also in that household at that time
were Alex’s children, Mamie and Virgel Posey
(Jim). Benjamin (Bennie), his brother, lived with Ed Mosley.
In 1920 Alex was listed as head of his
household with eight children - Mammie, Gordon, Allen, Virgel
Posey (Jim), Martelie (Telie),
Jennice, Woodrow, and Alexander, Jr. (Assumed to be later known as Bud). Also in this
Census, Benjamin was listed as head of a household which consisted of him and
hired hand Edgar Jenkins and his family (could not be the Edgar Jenkins that I
knew). Also listed as head of households living nearby were Millard Abston who married daughter Ada, Daniel Tew
who married daughter Ida, and Dalphus who married
daughter Lula. This residence was
in Beat 11.
In 1910 Alex was listed as head of his
household in Clarke County, Mississippi
with wife Elizabeth (Ella) and seven children – Lula, Ada, Ida, Mammie,
Gordon, Allen and Posey. Also listed as cousins and living at the same location
were Dolphus Abston and Millard Abston.
Back in Alabama in 1910 Bennie was listed as head of a household which also
included his father, Allen I, and mother, Melia and cousin Edgar Mosley. It was
noted on the census document that Allen I and Melia could neither read nor
write. Bennie’s residence was on the Wimberley Road.
In 1900 Alex was listed as head of his
household with wife Ella and three children – Lula, Ada and Ida.
No
pertinent records for Alabama exists from the 1890 Census which was destroyed by fire.
In 1880 Allen Roberts is listed as head of
his household with wife Mrs A (Amelia or Melia) and
four children – Fanny, Alex, Bennie and Lonna.
The 1870 Census is confusing. In Township
11 in Choctaw County there is a listing for A Roberts with wife Ealey and four
children – Francis, Anthony, William and Moses. Based on ages and
geographical location, I assume that this is Allen Roberts and wife Melia and
children Francis, Alex, Lonnie and Bennie. There is a rumor that Allen left
Clark County under unfavorable conditions. This could account for the fake
names.
On May 1, 1861 Allen
enlisted in the service of the Confederate States and served as a private in
Company A, 5th Regiment Alabama Infantry until April 9, 1865. I respect his service for a cause that he thought
was justified. During March 1862 he
spent time in the hospital at Richmond, Virginia for chronic Rheumatism. During
the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 2-3, 1863 he was wounded and missing. The wound was a gunshot
ball passing between the forearm bones (serious). He was admitted to Chimboraza Hospital in Richmond, Virginia on June 30, 1862. He was captured on July 2, 1863 at Gettysburg and forwarded from Fort Delaware,
Delaware to Point Lookout, Maryland on October,
1863. He was transferred to Aiken’s Landing and exchanged on September 18, 1864. His discharge from
the service was April 9, 1865.
In 1860 Isaiah Roberts is listed as head
of his household in Clark County, Alabama with wife Sebell
and two children – Elizabeth and Allen.
In 1850 I Roberts is listed as head of his
household in Clark County, Alabama with wife Tracey and two children –
Allen and Jane.
In 1840 Isaiah Roberts is head of family
with one person under 5 years old which could be Allen.
